Inter-JUNE-leave Meeting Recap

With a DASH of Dash Quilting and lots of Interleave completes as well as some wonderful Show and Tell quilts, 32 members and 7 guests were in quilt awesomeness. I know, can it get any better than seeing lots of different fabrics put together in a variety of quilts – sometimes it can. Especially when several members shared their version of the Interleave quilt. The Interleave technique uses two blocks, cuts them into strips and then sews them together again. CFMQG had a workshop in April and some ladies learned either through trial and error, other workshops or tutorials – but there were a few of these beauties in the room on Saturday. Beth @blue_dragonfly5, who provided instruction for the April workshop, calls them “potato chip quilts” because you cannot make just one. Everyone was talking about their “next one.”

It’s always fun to see quilts up close and personal. I apologize as I don’t have a list of all the makers – it was quite a busy day! But here are the photos of the Interleaves.

As a group – they are all smiles, trust me!

From Interleave to Show and Tell. Donna @donnapquilts shared her version of Icy Waters by Amy Garro @13spools, a paper pieced quilt that measures 54 by 72. Donna calls her quilt FIRE and it is intended for her grandson who is graduating from high school and aspires to be involved in fire fighting. Donna quilted it herself using an edge to edge pattern with a flame motif on her Brother sewing machine.

Pat shared her version of Over and Down Under by Bonnie Sullivan @bonnieallthroughthenight. Pat’s unnamed quilt measures 49.5 by 49.5 and she used an ombre metallic jelly roll with solid black. Pat was not satisfied with the flow of colors in her first attempt and took the quilt apart to redo it. Quilted on her HQ Avanti.

Beth @blue_dragonfly5 shared her LIGHT WITHIN and her process for how she made this original design. It measures 59 by 66 and was created with 45 colors of Painters Palette solids. It is an altered Anvil Block with a spiral walking foot quilting design. Beth used the color placement technique inspired by the Fingerpaints QAL with Laura Loewen @quiltfortco and the colors and values were inspired by an Amish watercolor painting. This is the second in a series of colorplay quilts.

Linda @flourishingpalms shared two items on Saturday. One is her SEAGLASS QUILT #2 measuring 35.5 by 47 with credit to Allie McCathren @exhaustedoctupus. This was quilted on Linda’s Bernina 770QE and this time the seaglass pieces were appliqued on natural linen using 80 wt Aurifil on top and 50 wt Aurifil in the bobbin. It has a faced finish from Hayle Grzych on We All Sew. The FREEHAND RAINBOW APPLIQUE pillow measures 19 by 19 and was hand appliqued with 80 wt Aurifil thread (thanks to the gift following Auriphilosophy program presented to CFMQG in February) and hand quilted with 12 wt Spaghetti perle cotton by Wonderfil. The design of the pillow is by Jo Avery @joaverysttch All handstitched!

Lynette @netsyclay is up north but wanted to share a finish from her world for our June Show and Tell. Her quilt is called GRADUATED STAR and measures 76 by 101. This is for her grandson and was made during the COVID lockdown. The pattern is Super Nova by Sarah Craig @fabricaddictquilts (free tutorial) Lynette’s quilt has batiks, shimo, Painter’s Palette solids, and Warm and Natural products in it. Quilted by her friend Pat Barry.

Some reminders for members, the sign-up for David Owen Hastings’ workshop is underway. The workshop will be virtual on August 27 from noon to 6 PM. Please let Karen know if you are interested. There will be an in-person workshop on September 24 for No Fail Inset Circles. Information on both of these workshops is on the calendar on our website. Next month members are asked to bring their improv quilts or blocks – that includes blocks or quilts they think may be improv and aren’t sure where they fall. The program will be a discussion about improv, and hopefully remove any sense of caution or fear associated with branching out to the world of improv.

And we are not done yet! Members and guests were treated to a presentation by Schloe Kerness that included a trunk show on DASH QUILTING. Schloe shared a personal story on how she started her business that involves a quilting template specific to making DASH blocks. She also shared a personal story on how quilting serves as her therapy. Included in her trunk show were two quilts that her Mom had made in the 70’s and her wide variety of quilts using the same DASH template. Schloe said if we use her template which ties nicely to layer cakes, we could have a quilt top done in a day….day and a half. Thanks Schloe for sharing your stories and quilts with us.

Thank you everyone for sharing your quilts with our members Saturday. Don’t forget to set aside your improv quilts for July and go forth and MAKE MODERN!
