November Meeting

Thirty-three people, including three visitors, gathered for our November 11 meeting at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood. Our meeting coincided with Veteran’s Day, and two members present were thanked for their service: Dee A served seven years in the Air Force, and Alice S served three years in the Army.

2024 Programs and Workshops

Slideshows were presented revealing the 2024 meeting programs as well as all the workshops planned in 2024. Those slideshows, containing dates, detailed topics, presenters, cost, signup dates, and other important details, can be found at this link. Linda H. also created handy bookmarks to serve as reminders. If you missed the meeting, look for the bookmarks at future meetings, including the holiday party in December!

Challenge Reveal

Twelve members revealed Challenge quilts! The theme was “Choose Your Own Challenge,” and the variety of options resulted in some very diverse quilt reveals! The guidelines included a size minimum of 20″ x 20″ and a choice of four options, from which one or more could be chosen:

  • Sustained and Repurposed: at least 70% of the quilt should be of repurposed fabric
  • Two-Colors: two colors must be 90% of the quilt. Up to 10% may include a third color, for accents in piecing and/or thread
  • Half-Rectangle Triangles (HRTs)
  • Color of the Year: the color of the year (either Pantone’s Viva Magenta, or Kona’s Crush) and similar colors must comprise 70% of the quilt, unless used in combination with a two-color quilt option, in which it must be 50%.

The first name drawn during the reveal was Beth S @blue_dragonfly5. She designed a 30″ x 40″ quilt called Rotation. This quilt utilized both of the Color of the Year options, as well as HRTs. Originally, Beth intended for the quilt to be two-color, but she did eventually add other colors to create the visual effect she wanted. Beth created her design in EQ8 and the quilt has wool batting and a faced edge. She walking-foot quilted it on a Viking Sapphire domestic machine using straight lines, 1/2″ grid, and matchstick techniques.

Linda H. @flourishingpalms revealed a maximalist quilt named Feelin’ Groovy, which measures 67.5″ x 84.” This quilt features HRTs, each pieced with a striped fabric and a solid, that Linda created using the HuRTy ruler by Latifah Saafir. Linda also added hand-appliqued circles using polka-dot prints after piecing and quilting were done. Feelin’ Groovy was quilted using walking foot, ruler quilting, and free motion quilting techniques on Linda’s Bernina 770 QE.

Bonnie B revealed her quilt next, which features improvised HRTs as well as a Color of the Year.

Next to reveal was JoElla M @jemquilter, with a repurposed 37″ x 44″ quilt named Ode to Pablo. JoElla created this quilt by unpicking a coat bought from a Salvation Army in the Keys in about 2010. She then used the motifs, some of which needed to be pieced together, to create the quilt. JoElla quilted it using a tack stitch on her Janome 6700P and added hand sashiko around the motifs.

Mary T revealed a two-color quilt called Side Stepping, which measures 33″ x 33.” She based her quilt on a courthouse steps block and quilted it on her Viking domestic machine.

Jane G @gonequiltinginflorida revealed Flight, measuring 52″ x 62″ and created using an HRT Bloc Loc ruler. Jane quilted this on her domestic machine.

Next was Ardie W @fatquarteraddict, who revealed Ninja Stars, a 55″ x 64″ quilt made using an HRT ruler. Ardie designed this on EQ8 and quilted it on a Handi Quilter.

Virginia B revealed a repurposed quilt with special significance – she used material from shirts that belonged to her husband, who has passed away. She also incorporated denim from her son’s jeans, and the binding fabric matches a quilt she made for her granddaughter. Virginia quilted it on a longarm with 12 wt thread in the top bobbin and 40 wt thread on the bottom.

Patti R @pattirose6 created Remnants of Shanghai, a repurposed quilt measuring 32.5″ x 44.” Patti lived in Shanghai for three years, and found pieces of Tubu handwoven cloth in the antiques market there. She also took Shibori (resist dyeing) classes at an art studio. She pulled the pieces together and added repurposed denim to create an Asian-inspired wall hanging full of treasured memories. Patti used Darlene Michaud’s Cheater’s Sampler Quilt and made some changes to the pattern, removing the sashing and adjusting block sizes. She quilted this on her Janome M7.

Michaelyn N @maltedmik revealed her quilt, Tide Pool. Tide Pool measures 44.5″ x 51″ and was created using improv techniques. She normally quilts with lots of color, so decided to challenge herself by making a two-color quilt. She said that she expected it to be hard, but found it fun! This quilt was quilted on her Janome 8900.

Next, Alice S revealed Metamorphosis, a 34.5″ x 34.5″ original design. Alice created this repurposed design by cutting up a quilt top she made previously. She quilted it on her Bernina 480.

Our final reveal was Karen E @sunrayatplay, who shared Jazz Festival, a 46.5″ x 55″ improv two-color design. Karen quilted this on her Baby Lock Tiara.
