February 10, 2024 Meeting

Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met Saturday, February 10, 2024 for their monthly meeting. There were 33 members and three guests in attendance. Announcements included information about Quilt Con 2024, the March and April program topics and a reminder for May. Yes, there will be a May meeting on May 11 and yes Virginia, the dates of the retreat truly have changed to May 3-5 with May 2 as an optional date. Registration for retreat will begin on March 9.

Our program was on Markers – heat erase and water erase – tips and tricks. Jeanette McClintick provided a “Consumer Reports” evaluation of a variety of markers and what she learned through testing the markers. She followed directions and showed us the results which included some surprises, including ghosts, lines that didn’t go away and yes, lines that reappeared after freezing. Jeannette said that some markers would be fine if they only ended up in the refrigerator and not the freezer. Biggest takeaway….test, test, test! Including your thread choices when stitching over the marking lines.

Show and Tell included a variety of creative makes.

The Universe by Irene R @riedmanirene

This is an original design utilizing selvage edges, measuring 30 by 30. Quilted by Irene @riedmanirene with some applique designs as well as paper piecing techniques to create The Universe.

Aurora Borealis by Irene R @riedmanirene

Irene @riedmanirene was inspired by a class with Carolina Oneto @carolina_oneto to create this 8 by 8 piece of art. She utilized Sashiko embroidery work to create the detail for her version of Aurora Borealis.

Unnamed by Shloe K @dashquilting

Shloe @dashquilting utilized the Free Wheeling Single Girl Template by Denyse Schmidt Quilts to create this quilt of rainbows out of her jelly roll collection. The binding uses multiple colors extending the fun into the edges of the quilt. Shloe matchstick quilted this on her domestic sewing machine.

My Area by Linda H @flourishingpalms

Linda H @flourishingpalms shared her home map called My Area created during a virtual workshop with Timna Tarr @timnatarr “Making Maps.” It measures 19.5 by 24.5 and Linda used a Clover bias tape maker – the 1/4″ size. Fabric was fused to the background and then quilted in place.

Bonne B @bonniequiltsaway participated in a “Fearless Improv Curves” class with Cindy Grisdela @cindygrisdela and used her blocks to make a quilted jacket for her granddaughter. The jacket is quilted to a sweatshirt using Edyta Sitar’s Beachcomber Jacket pattern.

Dream Lines by Bonnie B @bonniesquiltsaway

Bonnie @bonniequiltsaway participated in the Brenda Gael Smith @brendagaelsmith Improv 2023 Dream Lines Challenge with prompts each month to create a block using two colors. Bonnie stated that this was her first attempt with improv and wonky isn’t something that she feels comfortable with, especially since she works so hard to get a straight line!

Dream Lines by Beth S @blue_dragonfly5

Beth shared her version of Dream Lines, also created during the Brenda Gael Smith 2023 Improv Challenge. This was walking foot quilted and as part of the 100 day challenge, she used regular and decorative stitches to accomplish the machine quilting on her Viking Sapphire. It measures 42 by 54. As part of the Modern Quilt Guild “Use It” Scrap Challenge in 2023 (October to December), Beth pieced her back to Dream Lines, shown below. Beth’s quilt back was one of ten prize winners of Hobb’s batting.

There were two workshops registrations made available at the February meeting. One was for a Personal Item Carry-On Bag taught by Ardie to be held Saturday, March 23.  Four openings remain, so if you are interested – please contact Karen to sign up. The second workshop is Sylvia Schaefer’s Designing With Negative Space, a virtual workshop on Saturday, April 20. This is a no-sew workshop! If you are interested, let Karen know.

The next meeting for Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild will be March 9, 2024 at 10 A.M. The program will be QuiltCon Review with information on the winners as well as selections of favorites from those attending. Did I mention there are 20 members attending? May everyone attending have safe travels! In the meantime, let’s make modern!
