March Meeting

On March 9, 32 people gathered at New Life Christian Church for the March meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild, including two visitors.

Announcements included a reminder that spots are still available for retreat at Luther Springs May 3 – 6 (with May 2 available as an optional add-on.) Consider the extra day, as there may not otherwise be enough people to continue to offer the extra day. See the March newsletter for details about pricing. Checks for retreat will not be cashed until after our next meeting.

There are also spots available in two upcoming workshops: Ardie W’s Personal Item Carry-On Bag workshop in person on March 23 from 9 am – 12 pm and Sylvia Schaefer’s Designing With Negative Space workshop on Zoom April 20 from 9 am – 12 pm.

President Karen E announced that we no longer have our P.O. Box, so please don’t mail anything to that address. Please see the email sent by Karen for an alternative mailing address.

Vice President Linda H shared that the QuiltCon app still has the quilt show information available through the end of March, if you want to look at the quilts and their information (including dimensions!) Linda also provided information about a free Block of the Month from the Seattle MQG. The BOM is called Like, Totally and was designed by Louise Wackerman @imfeelincrafty. Information can be found at this link.

Media Coordinator Courtney S asked that anyone who hasn’t had their picture taken for the directory (or would like a different picture taken!) speak to her. The slide show from Jeannette M’s February Quilt Markers program is also available on the Members Only page of the website.

Program Chair Jane G shared that our program for April 10 is Basic Principles and Elements of Design by Karen E and JoElla M. We have also added a program for our May 11 meeting, Kick Out Your Inner Critic & Make It! presented virtually by Alex Byrnes @lixiemakesit. At QuiltCon, Jane also received information from Candi of the Jacksonville MQG, who shared that QuiltFest Jacksonville has added a modern category for their quilt show September 19 – 21. You might consider submitting a modern quilt entry for this show!

Nominating Committee Chair Mike N presented a full slate of nominations for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Media Coordinator, and Program Coordinator positions for next year. There was also an opportunity for open nominations from the floor. Voting will be conducted by electronic survey; email links have been sent out. Please vote, as responses from a majority of the membership are required for a successful election.

Show and Tell – CFMQG QuiltCon Quilts

Beth S @blue_dragonfly5 had two quilts accepted to QuiltCon 2024. Illusion won 1st place in the American Patchwork & Quilting Super Scrappy Challenge! The Light Within was exhibited in the Modern Traditionalism category.

Regular Show and Tell

Sandi K shared her quilt, Sonny’s Sunshine, measuring 41″ x 47″ and made for her first great-grandchild. She started this quilt at last year’s retreat. It was quilted by James Estes of Ocala.

Karen M @kam_mcg shared a quilt called News Real. This quilt measures 30″ x 45″ and was created using large-scale paper piecing following Ardie W’s workshop on this technique. Karen quilted this on her 32-year-old Bernina 1031 with a walking foot.

Program – QuiltCon 2024 Recap

For our program, Linda H and Jane G shared a presentation of the category winners from QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh, as well as submissions from members who attended. Members were tasked with sending in a favorite quilt, as well as something they noticed, such as a new trend. Those who attended commented on their submissions and some interesting discussion resulted!
